For anyone who’s been looking for a good reason to treat yo' self, consider this: You probably don't do it often enough, and putting "me time" on the back burner is a big part of why you may feel run-down, frustrated, and overwhelmed.
Often-ignored but totally necessary, self-care is any action or behavior that helps us improve our mental and physical health through better self-esteem, less stress, and overall wellbeing. These behaviors provide balance in an increasingly over-stimulating world and keep us healthy, happy, and more in-tune with our minds and bodies. Plus, by making the choice to practice #selfcare we have a tendency to care more for others—proving its importance for not just ourselves, but the world around us.
So why do so many of us ignore it, call it self-indulgent or simply feel we have to sacrifice ourselves in order for all our other responsibilities to get done?
Let’s change that! Let’s leave the guilt behind and abandon the idea that it’s a luxury we don’t have time for. Let’s acknowledge that by taking good care of ourselves we have more of our best self to give to others. Contrary to what you may be thinking, it doesn’t have to be an “either or” choice and you can learn how to carve out time and experiences that allow you to operate at your best and not abandon your responsibilities. Let’s start incorporating a little self-care into every day.
Need a little help getting started? We recommend trying to find just 20 minutes a day. Don’t overcomplicate it, keep it simple. Instate something that is easy to maintain and incorporate into your life on a regular basis. Try putting the phone down when you have your morning cup of coffee and check in with how you're feeling. Start going to that workout class. Maybe it's as simple as recharging with an afternoon nap on Saturdays, or a Sunday evening bath. (add crystals & candles to really help you relax) How about a smudging ritual, using Sage or Palo Santo to clear the energy of the past day and usher positive vibes for the day. What about an evening walk, getting that last of the fresh air into your lungs, it will help you sleep better. There are endless ways to self-care and there’s no right or wrong way to do it! Simply start!
